I thought I would post some pics of my winter project. Not so much is planned except some minor head work, changing the cam and increasing the CR.

Out it goes:

15 minutes later the engine was out.

The old specs were;

- 80mm crank
- 94mm Mahle pistons
- 44x37 CB Wedgeport heads with Bugpack 4046 springs and titanium retainers. The heads received a fluff and buff by the Baboon before mounting.
- Engle FK46 Cam.
- C.R. 9,5
- 009 ignition
- 48 IDA

As mentioned earlier I will change the cam along with the springs and valves. I will also increase the compression but it will still be on the low side because I still wish to play with the nitrous button.

My trusty 1300S gearbox is also out of the car and will be replaced by a much better suited box from Kevin @ KCR VW transmissions : http://www.kcrtrans.com/
Along with the gearbox I will also upgrade my tires and change the rims to the ones you can see on the left side. I`m actually just borrowing the rims from my girlfriend Kiss I think it`s
oh so cool that she invested in some genuine car parts! The burners will receive DOT slicks from MH.

I had some electrical issues last year due to a poor performing Optima Battery. I tossed the sh.. in the garbage and will change it to a .............. Optima blue Top. Or do you guys know of a better high capacity battery?

I was glad to see that everything looked ok when we opened the engine. Guess it must be pure luck since "everyone" is experiencing lifter "issues" over there. My lifters were SLR resurfaced racing ones from http://www.aircooled.net/  On the other hand, with only 200 miles last season everything should look like new.

On top of the mentioned upgrades I have also built a new fuel system with a separate Holley Blue Pump and regulator for the Nitrous and a separate 10mm fuel line.

Right know I`m waiting for my heads to be finished and I have also sent some parts off to a cryo treatment.

Feel free to comment or ask questions  Smiley

Cool to see your project Kalle, I feel the urge to pick up my new case one of these  days, so I can get started.

BTW are you repainting the whole car except the rear apron? :-p

Oh, I forgot to mention that the other small project was repainting the whole car except the rear apron Smiley I knew someone was going to comment on the tape.

BTW, here is my gearbox builder Kevin and his brother Greg.(Kevin on the right) I popped over to say hello and to pick up my new gearbox in September. Kevin packs his boxes really well and I had no problems bringing the box home to Norway.

It`s about time for a little update, sorry for keeping you waiting!

Well, what`s new... ordered the new MSD digital 6 ignition system last Friday and received a e-mail from vwparts.net on Monday saying that they have sent it. Today (Wednesday) the UPS delievery guy called because he was standing outside my front door with the package. Dam, one and a half working day after it was shipped from US!!

I did also pick up the Burners on Sunday and I have to say that my friend Jørn "Knastenrad und Knotenblech" Tangen did a very impressive job with the paint. A big THANK YOU Jørn! Now it is just up to me to start polishing them. I did also receive the new Kolbenschmidt bearings the other day so things are slowly but steadily coming together here.

Here is a pic of the painted burners and Jørn.

Thanks for reading!

This is what the UPS guy brought with him. Looks quite high tech compared to my old and trusted 009. Well, high tech is not always a bad thing is it....?

Thanks to John @ vwparts.net for excellent service.

Sorry for the bad cell picture.

My only observations are:
i) Welded stroker crank + stock-style rods + 9.5:1 + nitrous is not a great combination. I'd rather forget the nitrous at this stage and invest the money in better a bottom/stronger end.
ii) Gear ratios too low for a nitrous motor – especially 4th gear (I'd like to see 3rd a little higher, too)
iii) Case need shuffle-pins if you plan on turning it at high rpm – with the current gear ratios, it WILL be!

Thanks Keith,

Just the kind of feedback I`m looking for even though it may sound like I`m heading in the wrong direction Lips Sealed

i) Jupp - old, velded Sune crank and Porsche rods + even a higher CR and a slightly bigger NOS shot is planed this year. Better keep my fingers crossed when I hit the fun button..
ii) Yes I agree, they are low and I know that supercharged engines likes higher ratios. It would be very borring running out of oumph after 300 meters.
iii) Ups.. interesting. May I ask why you feel that my case needs to be shuffled pinned? My car will not see 8000+ rpms that often. I have changed bearings every winter since I bought the engine and the case bearing surfaces also looks ok. I have also balanced the crank, flywheel and clutch up to 10 000 rpms after each season.

This is what Mark Herbert says about shuffle pinning;

"Shuffle pinning is supposed to keep things from "shuffling" and wearing at the case parting surface. It doesn`t work. VW cases wear because of crank flex. The bigger the crank and the higher the rpms the more this area will wear, whether you have shuffle pins or not. also the center main bearing gets worn also. if you can keep your motor below 6000 most of the time with a big stroker crank you will see much less wear than a motor that sees lots of revs all the time"

I`m not trying to set two statements up against each other! I just want peoples opinion on the matter and why.

It`s about time that I update this thread again. Engine is finished and I raced it for the first time last weekend and I must say that I`m very satisfied with the mods we did this winter. My old personal best was 13.31 and 165 km/h and I managed to improve my time to 12.73 - 175 km/h. with a 1.76 - 60ft. bogging out from the line - without nitrous. Suprisingly enough the engine pulls great from low rpms all the way up to 8000+ with no "dead" area at all.

Here is some pics I took today when I drove the car to a friends garage;

It is indeed a really good feeling to be able to take the car out after a long winter and to let it stretch it`s legs on the highway. You have very good eyes JHU and you`re right, it was my little secret speedtrick until now  Cheesy

Wow, again thanks to you all for the kind words!!

Finally the summer is here and I`m going to take some days of away from the garage before I start to prepare the car for the main event this year - SCC 2006.

The only issue remaining is to get the fuel pressure for the Nitrous system under control. I have a separate Holley Blue pump with the Holley regulator, a separate 10mm fuel line and a separate electrical system for the nitrous system. I do not have a return line back to the fuel tank and I guess this is the reason why the pressure keep on climbing to 15 psi no matter how I much I turn the screw on the regulator?
Apart from that I only have to change the oil, adjust the valves and turn the key. Maybe I should follow up on a tip I received from a Finnish friend at this year Bug Run event; Make sure to drink a lot of alcohol days before the event so that you get major drinking nerves. According to him the nerves will give you a excellent reaction time  Roll Eyes  Sound logical to me... Cheesy

I hope to meet you all at SCC 2006!
