what are those outlets in upper part of the fanhousing for?  Huh
I wonder how the IDAs worked with pea shooters
The first full-on VW motor I built was back in late 1974 – it was a 1679cc motor for a rally Beetle. It used dual 48IDAs on 40x35 heads and a stock exhaust system (partly to preserve ground clearance). It still revved to 7000rpm, but for rallying we were more interested in torque than outright power.

We modified the fanshroud like the one shown in the photo so the car could still have heating. With the old linkages, the stock heater outlets got in the way!

Happy days… Could tell you a bunch of stories from then but they would pale into insignificance compared to what was going on the in SoCal at the time. Wink

I once watched a BTCC race where the lead Volvo was sidelined and had to retire because Rydell couldn't see out the windscreen!
I would think you would need the stock heaters hooked up to de-fog the W/S if nothing else.
Running in all weather conditions you would probably battle condensation as well as the track.

These cars are rad. It would be cool to make a replica.
