Looks like this got a little out of control..
JHU: Like I said on the phone earlier, I think your car would be best off without a frame (who needs bling and extra weight?)
On a car as clean as yours will be it would look a little out of place in my opinion.
I would go for a blue/yellow California plate without frame for that periode correct look. Blackplates are cool, but blue is more '79....

Getting back to JHU's question. One of the things we used to do would be to take the "dealer" frames, have them rechromed and then paint the relief areas to match the body. Looks good on certain colors usually ones that contrast well with the chrome.

I'm sorry (now) that I used to use only a black frame back then. When I had my squareback, I got from Volkswagen West. It had both front and rear frames.......no big deal (then!). MY, how we have changed.

Well I always ran a black plastic frame that was made by wink. The same people that made the multi panel mirrors. Another popular frame that I've been looking for is a frame from Ala-Moana VW in Honolulu.
Rick, Henry and I ran those plate frames in DKK. The current dealer is still Ala Moana but not the same vintge plate frame. When all the V-Dubs were gone I did pck up an 80's Ala moana Porsche Audi frame for my 928 S-4. Car is long gone but the frame is now on the wiffy's SUV and still pristine after 12+? years. My original Ala Moana VW frame was stolen along with my 67 Black Ragtop Ghia. My third and last DKK car. Glenn

Mine... Wink Grin

Frank

That's interesting Frank... usually black and yellow plates are 3 letters followed by 3 numbers. That must be a special issue of some kind... not sure what it's for.
I believe it is either from a truck or a trailer.  Several 60's chevy pickups around here have similar plates.

You read my mind! I know Rick can make these, and he is already making me the thresholds and kick plates. Since you are so close to his house, you might be able to show him what you have. I hope to see Rick @ Temple next Sunday. Thanks again, Dean
