Let say I have a 74 crank and 88 PCs set. And let say I want to be able to swap heads and carbs at will from single port/single 2bbl carb to dual port/IDA. What would be your cam choice? Xavier

120? With SP AND single central carb(2bbl)? I remember reading on this forum about cam overlaping with such a combination? Dyno used a 120 with SP but had Kads...

Is this just 'an interesting question', or are you REALLY considering this? Because ... it's a pretty goofy question. Unless your trying to fit into two very specific racing classes, why would you want to do this? As for the 'why?', this is a very good middle of the road cam choice. It borders on the outside of the possibilities of your 'single' carb choice ... by the way, you didn't actually choose a carb! Zenith? 40DCN? 48IDA? Weber progressive? Plenum manifold or split runner? Until you get more specific, anything can be thrown out there ... Back on track >>> It will also be a good introductory cam (especially with 1.25: rockers!) for your dual port heads and IDAs. With compression set around 9 to 9.25:1 you'll have an very responsive engine with good off idle torque and decent power to 6 grand, maybe a little higher. Since you have two sets of heads, there could be 2 different compression ratios due to differing chambers ... yet another variance that is unknown. TxT ... in the dark, as usual ...

Back in the day, it would have been an Engle 110 with stock ratio rockers... at least from where I sat.

My "why" was directed at Xavier, as I really don't understand the need for a motor like this.
I second the 110. Use 1.25's with the IDA's/dp heads. It will work ok in the single port, and really well with the IDA's and dual ports. IMO, the 120 would be better suited for a larger displacement.

I disputed myself over the 120, but I simply like it over the 110 ... personnal preference. I think the IDEAL cam would actually be right in between the two. W115? LOL

It will definitely get built!

So single carb will be a Holley 2110 on individual runner intake. CR? As I will not race it I will keep it under 9:1.
Why? I am kind of carb pervert and would like to use them all but cannot afford to build multiple engines.
So should I go for the 110(or similar)?

Do yourself a big favor and trade that Holley in for a Zenith. You'll be glad you did.
I'd run 8.5:1 max with the sp, 9+:1 with dp. The 110x1.25 with good dp heads and IDA's will allow 6k+ rpms.

It's tough enough finding a cam to optimize the flow characteristics of one set of heads and carbs but you are trying to do two... Anything you pick will compromise one or both sets. That said a VZ15 would be my choice but make sure both sets of heads have great dual springs.

There is a feature in the Hot vw's from february 75 about a 1800cc engine with a single NDIX. Specs are; CB 88 mm slip in barrels and 74mm crank assembly (included modified late rods (311)) CB 272 cam kit. stock dual port heads. Zenith 32NDIX and plenum manifold. 1.4:1 rockers arm. Bug Spark dual points distributor. stock flywheel and clutch. 4-pass oil cooler and power pulley. In this form it put out approximately 90bhp @ 5200rpm. sounds nice and period correct.

I am working on that Both have pro and con I will compare them on the road. Should I run the Zenith on a separate runner manifold or plenum with SP heads? Xavier

Will stock 'reworked' rods be enough for the DP set-up(with IDA)? 74x88 110(or similar) cam DP with around 9:1CR IDA

Stock rods will be good. I recommend a PO10 Zenith 32 on an individual runner manifold.
