Here is my new little beater. I have been driving a 7.3 powerstroke everyday at $4+ per gallon, so this seemed like a good excuse to get another VW. I found it on Craigslist about an hour away. First VW I have ever owned that I trailered home, and then immediately drove across town. Most everything works. Dome light, instrument lights, back up lights. The prevous owner cut and turned the beam, added '70 rear fenders, cut the seats into lowbacks, and had them recovered, and it came with a rough set of 8 spokes w/ new tires. I had the riviera's sitting around so I threw them on. It is a '74, and has a 1641, pertronix, and a header. I took the family through the hills last weekend, and we got 33 mpg!!. Only real bummer is the guy before me tried to rattle can the whole thing. Dry in most spots, big runs in other spots. At least he used a color close to stock. I will wait till spring, then do a quicky single stage respray the stock color. There is no rot in the wheel wells, and the pans are solid. I am going to do up a correct beam w/ drop spindles, and add a CD player. The engine needs to come out for a clutch and oil leaks, so I think I will work over a set of stock heads and toss on a light flywheel and an extra set of Kad's. It's ugly, but it seems to be working.

Oh man you just took me back 25 years. A guy named Bob Wacker worked with my dad in Las Vegas. He had a Caltrans-Orange '68 'looker with two-piece EMPI wheels--basically that car but with the correct fenders, shaved trim and signals, one-piece windows, gold-painted wheel centers, and two-bar spinners. He built it in the mid/late '70s and it was his daily so the paint had gone a bit chalky. But it was the definition of Cal Look to me for years. I had a nose-down '65 sunroof at the time that I so wanted to look like that car.

those are the correct fenders for the car Oh really? None of the '67s I ever owned came with door-mounted mirrors, trigger door handles, and short hoods with push-button handles. This is in the late-model thread after all.
