I need to update this post. quite a bit happened and is happening right now.
so after the bearing meltdown everything was opened and checked. I think I came close to loose the whole engine. the trust bearing was melted and the 3 rod was not lubed. so it was already gripping, but luckily no damage. in fact no damage to the crank. I managed to fix the case (the center pin moved) without the need to line bore it.
one think I still can't fully get my head around is that the bearings (main) were like new. the rod bearings needed replacement. why is one like new and the other gone?
I test fitted 4 sets and went with the same KS ones in the end. all works good.
since I was rebuilding the engine I thought it was time to put the smaller 30 hp tins on and try out a magneto. an old berg linkage was also fitted. the linkage needs a lot of thought and care to fully function. best described is that is quite crude in design and operation. but I made it work with some extra springs on the carbs.
doing this solved a major issue I had with the MSD. I had blown 2 coils before and was chasing a problem for a year by now. the magneto cured all that. it took me a while to figure out how to connect a tach and shift light. the rpm limiter was never fitted again. BUT does this work! simple clean and good. no fuss, good spark and no issues for the rest of the season.
in Spa we race uphill and me being me, I had to refit the old clutch. let me just say what most of you already knew. DON'T. with the heat it had it was gone. it works, but isn't as strong anymore and I think I may be even lucky it didn't come loose or exploded. after Spa I fitted a new clutch and disc again and everything was solved. The car runs great. so now it wa time to really test it. one of my 'issues' I have is that this is still a street car. the car itself is quite complete and the engine is half/half race. but I rarely drive it on the street. I don't seem to find the time to do so. and I haven't build up the confidence to do so.
so for the last race of this year we went with the BDRA to Marl (again). I did 13 runs in one day. even back to back without shutting the engine down between runs and leaving it idle in the staging lanes. so that way I really saw that yes the old gets hot. nothing dramatic AND it cools, even at idle. that was a very comforting idea. I did most of my runs consistently in the lower 13s and a 12,92 as well. so very happy with that. I even got a trophy for running a 13,156 as we made it a game to predict our time in the next run. I thought 13,15 would be consistant with what I was doing. very happy with this challenge and good fun too.
so now the season is ending and a few new things are on it's way. I did mention, that the engine runs good with good old 48IDA's and a magneto? well... of I am to fitting an ECU and EFI System. the block will basically be the same, and I just need to learn it. for now, nothing works. no spark, no fuel, it is hard at the moment, but I fitted most of the components and I think that once I got the basic parameters correct, I will be able to start it again and will try to achieve what I had with carburettors. hopefully better that. but I am getting ahead of myself.
have had this hanging in my wheel container for awhile now but it's time to move this piece someone who would appreciate this cool signed piece of history by Jeff Van Sant race car driver and brother to Chase Van Sant NHRA record holder
It's got A lot of patina but it's original and signed by Jeff when I bought his shop out a few years ago.
I am asking only $50 shipped within the US overseas add another $50 for usps air shipping
