When Dean LOWRY left EMPI to open his own Deano Dyno Soar company with his brother Ken, Lee took over Dean's job. At that time, Lee and Darrell VITTONE both rebuilt the Inch Pincher and campained it with Darrell at the wheel until Lee was laid off.
Lee then joined REVMASTER where he ran its VW engine shop and soon built the famous and successful SCORPION dragster.
2- The REVMASTER Scorpion :
Above picture is one of my favourite ever of the SCORPION. Notice the big smile on Lee's face... He didn't felt apprehensive at all...
The SCORPION was very tight and narrow from what remember Lee! This dragster was the world quickest VW powered vehicle of that era holding an impressive 9.74 seconds ET...
Period picture showing the REVMASTER crew bus pushing the little dragster with Lee at the wheels! Is it a cool inspirative bus or what? This scene took place at Bug-in 3 where Lee recorded the best ET of the day with an impressive 10,29 !
3- Lee today... :
Above picture shows Lee in his shop wrenching on an hi-performance engine for avery lucky customer.
Now, do you know of many racers from the good old days still wrenching on aircooled VW engines… Sure, some are still involved with the racing world, take the Schleys for example, but I guess Lee’s the one and only still working in his little shop. Lee deserved a special tribute for that!
THANKS LEE!!!
Above picture shows the very first SCORPION dragster before it was even lettered... Talk about a rare picture...
Revmaster old adverts (1971) were highlighting the Scorpion which was described as the World's quickest VW powered vehicle with a 9,74 ET...
Above picture : A close up view of the aforementioned Revmaster advert !
When asking Lee what was his best memory regarding racing at Bug-in, his answer is : "Racing Dean Lowry in his Boneville car with the Scorpion". I guess that Bonneville car is the awesome Amante GT.
Now watch out for a special section devoted to the all red '55 gasser in the months to come...
