RICK MORTENSEN PICTURES Right picture : Hey, what about a period shot of Rick... Yeah, on this amazing picture, a very proud 20 year old Rick stand next his newly top chopped bug... This car was built in
1971-72. Rick recalls returning from an early Bug-In and seeing all the chop tops that were there. The Stutt Bee, Inch Pincher, Lightning Bug, just to name a few, had shown up with their roof lines lowered 4". It resulted in Rick going home and chopping the top on my 57 oval. And boy, it looked great!!! Note the flared fenders and extra large rims... Those were the 70's... Below picture : Wow! This is Rick '67 bug circa 1976... Is it a true Cal-Looker or whar? Awesome! Note the plaide interior, even dash with my recessed guages in it, the stinger hanging out the back. Rick recalls "I had just completed installing my dual webers and was letting it warm up while I ran in the garage to get a few screw drivers take with me on the test drive". Right picture :
The BAE Turbo Bug of Bob Mc CLURE who unfortunately died in a plane crash a
couple years later. Rick comments "His 1700cc, Hilborne Injected motor with a blow-through the injection set-up, ran an unreal 9.70 in the all steel oval. This was in the early 70's... He blew everyone's mind who watch him make the runs at the time. We could hear the car ripping the slicks loose at the beginning of each gear shift." I always loved that car... Maybe coz of the Inch Pincher too inspired paint scheme... Note the loose slick at the back... That's what can be called an hard launch... Below picture :INSANITY, was a 1600cc turbo, all steel drag bug that ran 11:30's. I'm sure most of the older guys will remember it from the early bug in days... It sure looked the part with its bright orange paintwork! Note the large gauges scoop in the front hood... Car now resides in Japan in a private collection of old Gassers... Below picture :Audley CAMPBELL Stutt Bee is another well known Gasser of the good old days... This is a shot Rick caught from the rear of the Stutt Bee as it was leaving the starting line at OCIR. An amazing shot in fact. Hey, I can't remember seeing a color picture of the Stutt Bee... Rick, only one word comes to mind reagrding those treasures from the past : THANKS! Thumbnail below : - Lloyd MOSHER in his "Little Giant Killer" Fiat is squaring up against the car of Rich STANCHFIELD's "Tuff-e-nuff". Rich Lives in Pheonix today and is still doing VW gearboxes. - Two famous Fiat drag cars that competed at the early bug-ins. If you look close, you see a young Lloyd MOSHER in the group of guys wearing yellow shirts. Lloyd is the bigger guy in the left of the group of three. For some of the older crowd, if they look close they will see a long haired (now bald) Rich STANCHFIELD, who is in the upper left hand side of the picture. E-mail : eldub@cal-look.com |
