RON JOHNSON PICTURES Before goin' any further, let me introduce you California Upland resident Ron JOHNSON, aka Doc. Ron's not a newcomer as far as the VW scene is concerned! In fact, he bought his first VW in 1969, a 1957 Oval with a broken crankshaft. During the early 70's, the Bug Ins shows started at OCIR and Ron was always driving down to Auto-Haus, Johnny's, Berg's... Since then owned many, many VW's. He has never owned a Type III though. Bugs, Karmann Ghias, and a Transporter. Oh yeah, one Fiat 600 VW powered (seen at right), and even a unusual BMW Isetta 300. Speaking of Isetta, look below : 1- A proud Ron at the wheel of his Isetta 300. 2- An Isetta at Bug-in circa 1972! Enough non VW material guys ;) Let's now have a look at those amazing pictures from the early Bug-in era! Left picture is from 1970... It's a very, very, very interesting one for several reasons! First, it shows an unsually seen angle from the staging lanes at OCIR... Nearly all the Bug-ins lanes pictures were taken from the OCIR tower... It makes this one very interesting! Second, it shows what can be described as a true metallic chocolate Cal-Looker... Remember we are in 1970, the very early days of Cal-Look... Now, this car is really something special... Look a that licence plate number : UOT 994 (after you have detailed the BRMs of course ;)... Well, this is Mike MAHAFFEY DKP '51 one... Awesome or what? The true enthusiast will have recognized the later green split to be owned by Ed CRAIG (Watch out for a feature of this one of a kind car soon)... Yeah, that's the same car... Look at Keith Cal-Look book page 47 for reference... Third, look at the cars around! Ok, it's not very apparent, but in the left corner foreground, we have the National Record Holder Tera Soar Amante GT nose from Dean LOWRY... Next is the Dirty Dave VANDERBEKE orange Gasser... Another I/Gas record breaker sponsored by Renfree motors, Orange, Cal... In front is the Renfree white tow bus... Sorry but I have any idea of the plexiglassed maroon gasser in front... Last but not least, your sharped eyes (Ok, bionic...) shoud have noticed the guy wearing an Auto-Haus T-shirt... Ahhh, those were the days at the tracks... Right picture shows the all green CommonWealth Motors bug! I have not much details regarding that car... Note the Porsche front rims, while the back seems to be genuine Deanos... Look at that legendary OCIR tower in the background!
Thumbnails below prove that the vintage VW were a big part of the show with some awesome split windows lineup... Hey, this is not often vintage VW appears here, so enjoy guys... Below is a very cool picture showing the friendy (and sunny...) atmosphere at the show... Again, you can detail the OCIR tower in the background... Ahhhh, those were the days...
What we have here is the Garden Grove truck of Don BURNS who was a regular at the Bug-ins and was well known in the Volkswagon world of Los Angeles as he was one of the most famous VW dealership... He was also a regular at the tracks with his little Gasser simply known as the Super Bug... It seems this is this car which is on tow behind the VW truck. Note the little scale bug which was used to make some passes at the track during the Bug-ins, believe it or not... E-mail : eldub@cal-look.com |
